The market for novel toys is extremely competitive and unforgiving. Trends come and go, while the classics are here to stay. The recipe for success lies somewhere between the two; in present times, it seems nearly impossible to create an original concept for a toy that fits those criteria. However, the portable seesaw is a clever, effective, and novel spin on the age-old playground staple.
The goal of this project is not only to conceptualize. but to physically create a Portable Seesaw. The first step of the process is the design: nth on paper and in CAD. The portable seesaw consists of folding arms and a retractable base. In order to meet the ultimate goal, the Seesaw must be designed such that the final product is ergonomic and easily portable. This requires careful analysis of the different possible bases/fulcrums as well as the method through which the Seesaw folds in on itself. After the designs are finalized, the Seesaw will be constructed using a combination of wood (for the main structure of the arms and base) and metal (for folding hinges and additional structural support) Cost is a factor that needs to be taken into account in any project. In this case, the materials necessary for the Seesaw are readily available and reasonably priced. The bulk of the fabrication will take place at a machine shop outside of the campus (which a group member has to access to), but the machine shop at 3101 will also be utilized when necessary.
